Carolyn Clark is an App State alum and came to speak to our class about her career, how she got there, and other helpful tips as many of us upcoming grads try to navigate the unfamiliar waters of "the real world." Carolyn is the director of Communications at Yahoo!
Carolyn gave a wise bit of advice to any future employee: be the first one at the job, the last one to leave, and always ask your boss if they need help with anything before you clock out. She said that this sort of work ethic is crucial and impressive in the job force.
This work ethic is one that we often see in many other cultures. Many Asian cultures have a more collectivistic culture. Often employees do not leave until everyone else is done with their work. These employees will stay and help out their fellow employee instead of leaving as soon as their day is done. This is strikingly different from the mindset of many Americans who just go in 9-to-5 and don't want to be at the job any longer than they have to be.
As people are coming to the states from other countries we are seeing these positive cultural differences become integrated. Many labor workers from overseas are said to be the hardest working and the most eager to help. We can take a tip from both Carolyn and the many immigrant workers now in the US and give it our all when we enter the work force.
