Meet Yalem

Yalem is an Ethiopian immigrant who came to the states a little over 4 years ago. Her parents came about 5 years prior to her journey over hoping to begin their life here and earn enough money to eventually send for Yalem, her brother, and her grandmother.

Yalem came to my high school at 18 years of age. She had only been in the country a month before starting school. Her math skills were excellent but she struggled with English. I began tutoring her and through this learned a lot about her culture and the struggles of many immigrants.

Ethiopian culture is drastically different than American culture. Interactions, greetings, and politeness vary between the two and often left Yalem in confusion. It was interesting to not only teach her about American culture but also to learn about her culture.

Yalem have kept in touch since meeting. I often will go visit her and her parents. She has come to visit my home. This friendship has taught me not only about her culture but also about how I can better help immigrants feel comfortable and informed in America.

One of the best things to do is to ask questions about their culture. When you learn about their culture you will better understand why they do the things they do and can clarify what differences are found between your culture and theirs. Being a friend is also so important as they transition to life in a new country. Something as simple as having them over for tea or coffee can help those who feel so out of place more at home.
